Anchorage FIR coverage
« on: August 12, 2018, 17:27:11 UTC »
Good afternoon, I wanted to tell you about Anchorage FIR control, I've seen that Ancorage Center (misc) only heard approach control and departures, and I wanted to tell you if someone from Alaska could provide the following coverage shown on this map: Sector 68,4, 10/11/9 and Anchorage Artic (64) and oceanic: https://images.slideplayer.com/10/2812229/slides/slide_3.jpg
https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/systemops/ato_intl/documents/cross_polar/CPWG23/CPWG23_IP04_Implementation_of_ATOP_in_the_Anchorage_Arctic_FIR_ver3.pdf  (page 4 sector map)

Here is a list of frequencies: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=3345

Thank you! It would be interesting to hear those areas!

Sector 64 is not implemented yet...anything above Lat 72 has no radar coverage so they only use Sector 04.
10/11 is mainly Oceanic and has limited radar coverage.
the sixty sectors are for flights above FL280.
If you are wanting to listen to those sectors, it'll be difficult since most them are not monitored on LiveATC.

Thank you for your answer, but I have a question, I know you are using the CDPDLC, but in the oceanic part you do not use the HF ¿in sector 10/11 and 64 to ask for position? I hope that someone contributes more coverage in the areas that can be of Alaska is a site quite trafficked by freighters and a lot of activity or monitor the VHF and HF of all sectors

The Anchorage Center (misc) feed is monitoring the Center frequencies, as advertised as far as I can tell, covering Sectors 05, 06, 07, 14.

You can hear the Sector 69/Homer controller on the "ZAN Anchorage Ctr (Homer/High)" radio. On the overnight shift 69 is combined with sectors 68 and 63, so covering a large area and busy at times.

Sector 04 used to be covered on the "PASC CTAF/Unicom/AFIS/App" feed. Although it's still listed, for some reason unfortunately it does not seem to be on there anymore ? On the overnight shift they would combine  04 with 15 and 16. Would be nice to have that one back on.

Sector 64 is covered by Gander Radio on 4675, 8891, 11279. Although in VHF range it's not uncommon to hear traffic transiting sector 10/11 come up on HF San Francisco ARINC for a selcal check, on 5628, 6655, 10048, 13339, 17946.

As they are using CPDLC in the Oceanic sectors, not sure how much you would hear on 10/11 voice frequencies anyway ?

To my knowledge, 11279/8891 are the polar, which only control the part of Canada and entering through Edmonton FIR to connect with VHF, I have been a good time with those frequencies and I never heard an airplane through that sector only by the trained pole toward Canada , in any case Anchorage Artic has its own frequencies in the pdf that I left a radar of the center there, yesterday I was watching a conference of a Spanish pilot, who flew by sector 10/11 from Shanghai to ANC, commented that they hardly used the radio, use the cdpdlc and only the hf to give frequency

Here I leave a photo where all the polar control centers are: https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-a88c62acb6a46a49a8a44aeaedaae583

The Anchorage ATOP sector 64 airspace is delegated to Gander Radio for voice comms. Eastbound you will hear flights checking on with Gander as they cross the Magadan/Anchorage boundary (169W), and westbound you will hear them report their position on the Edmonton/Anchorage boundary (141W) then they are instructed to contact Magadan at the Anchorage/Magadan boundary. They stay with Gander as they cross sector 64.

As SATCOM coverage still appears to be spotty that far up north it is quite common to hear these flights working Gander Radio. I checked the LiveATC 8891 archive from yesterday and heard Gander working a few flights through sector 64.

There are also published San Francisco HF LDOC frequencies that can be used as backup, but they are not used very often AFAIK. Iceland Radio can also be used as a backup. Current NOTAM below.

Thank you very much for all the information, certainly in 8891 there are many transpolar flights, but ... could you solve the question of the sectors 10/11 oceanic and if they are monitored in Live Atc?

There are not any LiveATC feeds that cover 10/11 AFAIK. Would be nice to have but probably would not be easy given the remote location of the transmitter sites.

Good again! I have been researching and I have found this: https://radio.arinc.net/pacific/ you have the updated hf frequencies of the day and you can hear what we are talking about the ocean anchorage air space, speak with San Francisco now at 6655khz, very interesting : http://kiwisdr.robinett.us:8073/

Thanks for the link ! First time I've seen that, very handy.

FYI if you are interested you can also find the occasional live Oakland and Anchorage Inmarsat SATCOM and HFDL data here .....

http://thebaldgeek.net:2880/ui/#/3

http://thebaldgeek.net:2880/ui/#/4

The HFDL reception isn't great, better to use one of the KiwiSDR's.

If you have Linux you can decode the CPDLC ("AT1" messages) using decpdlc (part of dumpvdl2).

https://github.com/szpajder/dumpvdl2

eg:

/OAKODYA.AT1.B-202822085D1D52ED4F821173E03A9D

/OAKODYA = Oakland Oceanic
AT1 = identifies message as CPDLC
B-2028 = Aircraft Registration
22085D1D52ED4F821173E03A9D = CPDLC message data

Decoded with decpdlc ...

FANS-1/A CPDLC Message:
CPDLC Uplink Message:
Header:
Msg ID: 4
Timestamp: 02:05:52
Message data:
CONTACT [icaounitname] [frequency]
Facility designation: KZOA
Facility function: center
VHF: 119.975 MHz

I'm observing that when they enter Anchorage Ocean, they give it high school and a VHF, 119.1 is pretentious to Anchorage but I confirm that 6655 are the ones that go from West to East (North) of the Pacific (Alaska), it speaks some Information, but not achievement understand
